Pros: The autonomy is great. You have to be a self-starter to succeed here and don't be afraid to get your hands dirty.
Cons: The processes are not there yet. A lot of things get thrown last minute.

Try out different things - use various methods of user research and see what is the most insightful - maybe that's surveys, usability testing with a prototype, focus groups, user journey mapping etc. Have fun with it! Don't get too attached to your first designs, always come up with options and be willing to change designs to suit the needs of users, without letting personal preference play into the decisions too much.
