Civil Engineer:

It all leads to management.
Civil Engineer:
Civil engineers are at the center of multi-disciplinary projects. We are often the prime contractor, responsible for ensuring our subcontractors are on track. But even if we aren't, it usually lands to us to ensure consistency among the other disciplines. Surveyors collect real world data of the terrain as it is now. Architects can design their buildings in imaginary air. Mechanical and electrical engineers often stop their design where the conduit leaves the building. It's up the civils to bring all these pieces together. We have to put the building onto the terrain in the real world. We have to make sure there's a water/sewer system to connect to. As engineers, we often like to get lost in the technical details. But success in this field is going to depend on one's ability to coordinate with those other disciplines. An engineer who can confidently call and communicate with other professionals is going to go farther than the engineer who just does their own part.

Company Culture.
Civil Engineer:
Pros: I love the team of people I get to work with. It makes going to work every morning fairly easy that people are pleasant and focused on moving the team forward. I like the opportunities my supervisor gives me; many others do not get the same opportunities at this stage in their careers. I am constantly challenged and taking on additional responsibilities.
Cons: There are a number of employees who I feel are over compensated for their value. Some folks slack off or consistently lose money for the company and are still rewarded. It frustrates me to know these people earn more than me when I can bet I work much harder than they do and oftentimes have more responsibility as well. In many ways the company is "old school". Some of these beliefs I support while others I feel need to change.
