Establish a great reputation--as a team player, as someone dedicated to doing a good job, as someone willing to work really hard. The reputation follows you, which is great, and the habits you form stay with you, too.

Don't do it. Don't even think about it. Do anything else. If you are capable of grasping highly complex technical information, do the actual job, don't just write about it.

Learn what you can about the publications field. Build your software and configuration management skills. Build your technical knowledge (STEM). Become familiar with style guides. Become proficient with templates and style sheets. Learn to be resourceful when faced with problem solving. Obtain project management certification. Learn to work with schedulers. Learn how to have crucial conversations, be accountable and be an influencer.

The subject matter expertise that you bring to a position is just as important as the ability to writer.

Pay attention to the details. You have the opportunity to make something complex clear to someone else. Always approach every task with a willingness to learn and grow and you will naturally pass that along.

Regardless of education and experience, most companies do not value Tech Writers. We are the first to be fired and last to be hired. Most people think tech writing is easy and anyone can do it. But it requires knowledge and skill to document how an application or hardware works. We have to "dumb down" engineers' and application developers' documents for the average person to be able to use the product or software. Tech writing is a specialize field and not everyone is skilled at writing processes and procedures.
