May 2014
Average Day Of A Portfolio Manager.
Portfolio Manager:
Most important thing to know is that you work with people's homes. Although it is just a job for you during working hours, this is their investment, where they spend time with their loved ones. Therefore expect extreme emotion when dealing with clients. It is also not a well know industry therefore clients do not understand how it works and the role you play and misinterpretation from them. If you can turn a Body Corporate around to a healthy financial position, with maintenance up to date and appreciative owners, you have succeeded and the satisfaction is an extreme boost. You just won't manage trust funds, you will be a psychiatrist, lawyer, plumber, electrician, accountant, adviser and many more that only adds to the surprises you are left with every day. Have a thick skin, focus on what you need to achieve, be prepared to work hard under extreme stress, multitasking a total 300 emails and calls a day over and above your daily tasks - and you will see the top.
April 2014
Fund Management- A Lifelong Career.
Portfolio Manager:
Pros: Mostly interesting, being closely involved in markets and investments. Seldom dull. Always lots to learn, no matter how long you have been in the job. Good work-life balance. Helps you learn lifelong skills, such as personal financial planning.
Cons: Performance stress, sometimes not within your control. Sometimes, clients have too much focus on short term performance, which can detract from doing the right things over the long term. More experience does not always translate into better performance and results, especially in the short term.
December 2013
Not Enough Time in the Day.
Portfolio Manager:
Pros: Great pay, good benefits and ability to use what you learned.
Cons: More work than time to do it, poor info systems.
