Pros: Financing interesting transactions, flexibility, learning.
Cons: Essentially a credit analyst in the field.

It is a new challenge, and a new role within the company.
Portfolio Manager in Johannesburg:
Pros: It is a new concept in the company, and I get to be part of setting it up.
Cons: There are various personalities that lends itself towards destructive behavior. These personalities are critical from a collaboration perspective to ensure that Enterprise Portfolio Management can work. These functions are Business Architecture, PMO, Project Management and Business Analysis.

Portfolio Manager:
Pros: 1. Connecting Funders to recipients. 2. Keeps you on the for-front of financial, business and donor trends. 3. Meeting new people. 4. Helping disadvantaged individuals and organisations to become sustainable. 5. Teaching the public the correct way of investing funds. 6. Researching and finding innovative ways to build an economy of self development.
Cons: In the NGO Sector, You are often asked to do more than one persons job however being paid little to no money, regardless of building a multi-million rand portfolio.

Work hard, but work smart.
Portfolio Manager:
When working for a small firm, you can't just keep your head down and do a good job. I've realized that "politics" plays a real role in the success of one's career. Surrounding yourself with smart people, giving them credit for successes and taking blame for failures goes a long way toward getting people to recognize your leadership capabilities. And leadership and communication skills are far more important to getting promoted than simply working hard.
