It's ok.
Design Engineer:
Pros: Freedom to be creative on new projects.
Cons: Lack of freedom to design on new project due to fluid design specs.

No one knows what I do.
Design Engineer:
I'm a design engineer now with a strong graphic design background. Most software engineers have little to no skill or knowledge with layout and design. My engineering skills are average or maybe below, by my strengths lend themselves nicely to the software development industry. As part of the team, I'm able to implement complex designs which allows the company to release complete products without needing to hire outside consulting to implement designs. It still seems like there is a lack of awareness of this need in the software world. CSS is seen as a bit of a mystery that few engineers see the value in learning.

Cons: We don't have flexi time or a gym at work.

Work with the people in the shop, as well as in the office. Don't be afraid to get your hands dirty.
Everything is in the details for triple check your work, and make sure everything is there that is needed.
