It is important to manage people with fairness yet understanding each person's individual difference. Although all rules must be followed, we have to lead by not only providing an example but by having compassion for each person and providing them the opportunities necessary to help them become successful in their work. Finding the appropriate fit for each person can be challenging. Although they may think they are in the right position for them, we can help by given our direct reports options for growth and venues for realizing their potential. Learning each person by asking where they see themselves in 5 or 10 years can give some insight. Helping them work towards their own goals helps them become more engaged.
