Assistant Professor, Postsecondary / Higher Education:
Pros: I love that I serve as my own boss. Besides my teaching assignments, I direct my own schedule for writing, researching, and meeting with people. I enjoy that my work schedule is flexible and that the atmosphere is casual.
Cons: Despite a 9-month contract, I work full-time in the summer. I do so because of the pressure to publish and secure funding. My position carries a fair amount of stress. As a top-tier research institution, my university pays me approx $4,000 below the average. Worse, salaries and raises differ wildly based on the professor's home department and college. Finally, my university offers zero maternity leave.
