An enormous small town.
Program Coordinator, Non-Profit Organization in Aurora:
Pros: A close-knit community of agencies, neighborhood groups and organizations comprise the non-profit sector in Aurora. The city has a population of over 200,000 (according to census data) but likely far more with the undocumented population of Latino families. The city has a thriving local arts scene with pop-up art galleries showing off the work of young and new artists alongside established and respected artists. Live music is easy to find year round and larger concerts come to River Edge Park every summer. The Paramount Theatre features high quality musicals and plays, Riverfront Theatre hosts community theatre, and the list goes on. If you know where to look or who to ask, you can find basement rap album release parties, community gardening initiatives, modern art, dance parties, etc.
Cons: Aurora has a small-town vibe to it that is hard to shake. Professionals all know each other or know someone who knows someone and this turns the rumor mill pretty steadily. There is poverty and violence (though things have vastly improved) and you begin to grow a sensitivity to outsiders making disparaging remarks about your city. Chicago is close enough that artists, performers and events must choose between Aurora or Chicago (an obvious non-choice) but distant enough that the city is staunchly suburban,
