Human Resources (HR) Manager:
HR is a "people" skill set. Knowing the Fair Labor Standards Act is good, knowing how to interact with people is mandatory. The company has policies, make sure they are followed. The employees will have issues that may be outside the norm, listen, listen, listen then act. You need to be strong in Leadership, Employee Relations, Recuiting, Personnel, Compensation, and Training/Development.
A former President of our local Steelworkers Union (5000 members) one told me, "Mike, you don't always do what's in the book, but you always do what is right.
