Great company, the pay wasn't competitive at all. Loved the people that work there. The work itself was interesting enough most of the time. Benefits were okay, not great. Opportunity for advancement was painstakingly slow if there was a path at all.

Great city if you can afford it.
Electrical Engineer in Austin:
Pros: The city is fantastic, and there are a lot of like-minded technology-literate people. The climate is fantastic if you can stand the hot summers.
Cons: Cost of living is high, and employer compensations have not risen appropriately to cover the increase. Much of management has lived in Austin for a long time, so the increased cost of real-estate has not affected them as directly.

Electrical Engineer in Houston:
My experience has been sort of middle of the ground as far as job satisfaction. On one point, I'm glad to have full employment as I truly "still need to eat" so to speak. On the other hand and with the exception of my U.S. Naval career, working for a government contractor has sort of been enlightening in the fact of how political things can become for what is seemingly a small issue. But, at the same time it has been enlightening as to how the inner workings of a government entity con be. It is fascinating. In this particular job, I find that I/m not being fully utilize as far as my education, skills and experience is concerned. Also, there is no room for upward mobility. The company seems a little flat as far as that goes. Lastly, my salary is not at the standard level that most electrical engineers enjoy, given my skills, education and experience. However, its a good company overall.
