February 2023
Teaching Assistant (TA) in Plattsburgh:
Pros: The people I work with, for and because of are the best. The teachers and administrators I work with are appreciative, supportive and grateful for each others service and the contributions we all make toward the education of our children. The children are my "why. Collectively, everyone makes this job the most satisfying job I've ever had. It is the job I'd do without pay if I didn't need the income.
Cons: The pay. While I love this job and it is the job I'd do without pay, I also don't feel anyone in direct, day to day, contact with students is paid enough. Education is one of the very few professional fields, that is essentially required by law, to touch everyone. All other professional fields, for the most part, require the foundation of an early childhood education. Considering a structure (symbolic or literal) is only as strong as its foundation, I firmly believe that educators should be making a wage that reflects the quality of the foundations they are building. I'm grateful there are still young adults choosing to go into education. However, at the rate we are going as a country, we have less and less people choosing the field of education with the result being weaker foundations to build our futures on.
