Social Worker Reviews
What is it like working as a Social Worker?
August 2014
Limited Avenues For Change.
Social Worker:
When considering a job in social work, consider there are limited fields to practice your trade. Most social works will work for DHR/state. If a desired field of practice is medical, then I strongly recommend going ahead and getting your MSW, and licensure. LMSW/LGSW. If one desires to "climb the ladder", then your options are limited re: social work, or at least that is my experience. Pay rate is low, and stress can be very high. When choosing the field, understand that people with less "college education/degree" will more than likely make more money than you, and will climb the ladder of success faster than you. I love what I do, but I can' t lie when I say it "burns me up" knowing I have a four year degree and am getting paid a little more than min. Wage, and someone with a 2 year degree makes twice, and sometimes triple than I. My rewards out weight the bad, and thankfully my husband provides the majority of our income. If he did not, I would have to have a second job, no doubt.

Doing The Most Good.
Social Worker:
Pros: I get to help and meet new people every day. I work for a church so my boss is amazing.
Cons: I'm not always able to help those in need. Lack of funds and lack of helping the right people who needs it instead of people who won't try to help themselves.

Career Path.
Social Worker:
If Social Work is a desired career path, my advice is to obtain an undergraduate degree in Social Work, but choose Business, Education or another discipline for your Masters work, as you will have many more opportunities available to you.

You Can't Fix Everybody Or You'll Hit Burn Out.
Social Worker:
Learn to pace yourself and remind yourself that the patient is here to do the work for themselves. You are the facilitator. You will hear the first client's heart felt story of true hardship and want to do everything for them, but by the end of the 1st month, you will have been told the same story by 100 people variation of the same story. As harsh as it sound one must learn to remain objective about the whole position. You can't help everyone.

Very demanding.
Social Worker:
Pros: Helping others.
Cons: Low pay, poor benefits, no 401 K, ungrateful bosses, ect....

Day To Day, Challenges And Rewards.
Social Worker:
Pros: I like seeing kids and families feel empowered and watching the transformation from chaos to stability. My co-workers are fun and my schedule is flexible.
Cons: The work is very stressful. There are loads of paperwork and unclear expectations. Management is poor and does not know how to manage staff well. There are late nights and early mornings. The families do not always want to have service providers in their homes and it comes out on me.

It's My Passion.
Social Worker:
Pros: I like that everyday is something new and that I am constantly learning.
Cons: Compassion, fatigue and the lack of the ability to truly leave your work at work.
