If you enjoy witnessing your contribution become beneficial, not only to you, however to people you support and the organization that employs you; then you should seldom be unhappy. It is my opinion that to be successful one needs to expand their field of knowledge of engineering. You may have one area more comfortable and comprehensible; however, one needs to understand how other fields interact to consider their effects on issues. This field requires some "hands on," which you should enjoy to a point to further understand difficulties by people who perform tasks day-in to day-out. As in any role, listen more then speak. Not everyone will accept you view, and that is good! For other perspectives require you to "think" of potential issues to your concepts. Don't rush. Pause to reflect, for a day or two if you can. Let your "mind" mull it over; for you may find a better method to the results sought.

Watch your overall debt structure. You don't want to work in a job that doesn't spark your interest just to pay the bills every month. I've done stupid stuff financially, but I can tell you that debt free takes the day to day pressure off so I can do what I enjoy.
