Senior Database Administrator (DBA):
Check how much knowledge your predecessor has, because you might be jumping into a DB mess. Doesn't mean to turn down the job, just know what you are getting into. Also confirm exactly what your duties will be. Spent 2 years with company constantly fixing data so could not do any DBA work and now scrambling to keep our servers online. It is also good to know what OS your DB servers run and have a good working knowledge of the basic for that OS. If your company has a support contract, like we do with Oracle, don't be afraid to submit any questions as Service Request; I have yet had any turned down. If you want to succeed long term setup monitoring tools for your server, such as Percona for MySQL, but don't setup too many "proxy" style plugins. Be honest with your boss about potential issues showing up and their potential impact, instead of blind siding them. It is a fun and rewarding career, just remember sometimes it make take a little longer than you expected to find the "fun".

Cons: They constantly are laying off key people and replacing them with Cheaper/Less Competent offshore people. This makes our job more difficult working with unqualified people.
