Support Systems, Targets and Development
Sales and Business Development Director:
Ensure the business you are going to work for have the appropriate systems in place to help support you in your day to day to role. Make sure that you establish defined parameters for success and that the business fully understands what will help and what will hinder your ability to reach your goals. Be mindful that you are not indispensable.

Are you the only one?
Sales and Business Development Director:
When starting in a role like this be sure to understand what the history of the role has been. Identify what predecessors have achieved and what systems are in place to support you. When I originally started I was the only one with a direct sales background and was very aware that I was entering into a complex sales environment. What I was not aware of was that I would need to implement every process, policy and procedure whilst also working towards targets. Whilst difficult it was a great experience but systems have been a challenge so make sure you ask detailed questions about the sales support infrastructure and gauge their understanding of what sales and BD is. Just because they are a large company does not mean they understand every aspect. In order to excel keep an open mind and always listen to your client, listen to their feedback and help them achieve their goals. Don't chase the sale, nurture it and the client and continually develop your proposition.
