Reporter Reviews

What is it like working as a Reporter?

October 2022
Mixed bag.
Reporter in Philadelphia:
Pros: It’s less expensive than New York
Cons: It’s still expensive, I’m isolated from coworkers, I can’t take sick or emergency time off if no one can cover for me, and there is no precedent or transparency regarding pay and performance reviews.
July 2022
Reporter in Philadelphia:
Pros: I am able to work from home
Cons: My news beat is very busy, Philadelphia civil law has incentives allowing out-of-towners to file lawsuits here. Also, my company does not have an office here. They’re HQ in California and have reporters all over. Before the pandemic, I worked in a city municipal building as an independent contractor on behalf of my company. It’s no longer safe or feasible for me to work in that location, so I have to work from home, which has some benefits but requires extra steps and therefore confers extra responsibilities on me.

Honestly, it's perfectly fine.
Reporter in New York:
Pros: I like writing about things I care about, my co-workers, my manager, the office culture.
Cons: They are fairly shady about pay, compensation, bonuses, etc.
September 2019
Good for soft reporters, not news hounds.
Reporter in Depoe Bay:
Pros: Women are believed and supported at The Newport News-Times. However, the newspaper in Centralia, Wash. is harboring someone who physically attacks women. That paper is also owned by News Media Corp.
Cons: How the company overall is managed.
September 2019
It's Fun, and Full of Black People (which is a good thing)
Reporter in Philadelphia:
Pros: I'm from Philadelphia so it's great to be around people I know and there's a lot of activities (concerts, shows, restaurants and other events) going on here.
Cons: It's getting expensive and Black unemployment is growing.
April 2019
Reporter in Wausau:
Pros: The opportunity to use my use skills to the upmost ability
Cons: Micromanaging
March 2019
Good if you know where to look.
Reporter in Indianapolis:
Pros: Indy is a small, growing city with a decent amount going on if you keep an eye out. Lots of young professionals.
Cons: Not a ton of opportunities in my field.
