Follow Your Instincts When Looking For Work.
Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner (NP):
Do not underestimate your worth and do not allow yourself to be underpaid. Do your homework first to negotiate a fair salary before accepting any position. Nurse practitioners tend to be exploited as cheap labor. Sometimes paid only as much as an RN. Once you accept a position, do your job to the best of your ability, always serve your patient in their best interest. Defend your decisions when administration has a different agenda that does not put the patient first. Remember why you became a nurse practitioner in the first place. Stay focused on your job. Listen to your patient's. Try not to rush them even when you are backed up (which is typical in outpatient mental health). Keep a smile on your face. Be proud of what you do.
