Product Management Director Reviews

What is it like working as a Product Management Director?

August 2019
Product Management Director in Seattle:
My role as a PM at Porch has been the best job I could ever wish for. The pace is very fast and as such I learn an incredible amount every day. Comp isn't as good as what you may see at an AMZN, MSFT or similar, but the tradeoff of faster learning & growth, an enormous amount of autonomy, and ability to have your personal contribution visibly & meaningfully effect the company's overall bottom line & long-term growth trajectory are deeply rewarding and well worth the tradeoff for me.

Interesting work, restrictive culture, process heavy.

Product Management Director:
Back in late 2012, Altisource opened their beachhead in Boston, calling it "Altisource Labs". It was to be a software innovation center, developing state-of-the-art software for the mortgage banking industry. They hired a bunch of smart start-up veterans, used a modern tech stack and tooling, and incentivised them all with market-level pay plus some pseudo-equity grants, with the idea that the software businesses would eventually spin out from the mothership. Altisource was investing a LOT in this radical idea. Fast forward a few years, corporate revenue tanks due to regulatory issues with their one main paying customer, and Altisource decides that building a software company out of nothing takes too long, and eventually lays of the majority of the staff, in a painfull, incremental process of multiple small layoffs spread over ~ 2 years. A grand experiment failed miserably.

Lots to do.
Product Management Director in Minneapolis:
Pros: Always opportunity and lots to do
Cons: Layers of management to get something done
March 2018
Product Management Director in San Francisco:
Pros: The general atmosphere of tech startups.
Cons: The horrible, abject poverty about which this city and it's residents can't seem to figure out if they even want to do anything.
