January 2015
Mental Health Case Manager:
Pros: Helping my clients when I am able.
Cons: Paperwork, poor leadership within the organization causing turnover, the physical working environment and demands of management.
December 2014
Research every possible area of the company.
Mental Health Case Manager:
If you are going into this field I would recommend a Master's in Psychology, Counseling (LSW, LPC, MSW) as I have discovered I am required to complete more documentation than the therapists or doctor's I work with at this time. Do complete research of the company, talk to someone who works in the position your want. Working in mental health requires ongoing education to keep up with advancements in counseling methods, medications, program reimbursements, knowledge of APS rules and regulations (check their last three APS audits - if below 89, I would not recommend the company) In this field, depending on the company you will discover either the company wants a traditional employee (do the job, don't ask questions or suggest new ideas) or an employer who wants up to date knowledge/creativity. Be wary of managers who have held the position 5 years or longer as they usually have not kept up with policies, laws, or pursued CE's, which can be detrimental to you - you know more than them.
April 2014
High Energy, High Stress, Never a Dull Moment.
Mental Health Case Manager:
Pros: When I am able to truly make a difference in a client's recovery from severe mental illness and I am given the rare opportunity to see a client improve in his functioning and mental health over time, this is a truly rewarding experience.
Cons: My case load is monstrously over sized- I am responsible for over 250 individuals. Everyone in the organization is stretched so thin much of the time that we all have to take on duties that are not technically part of our job descriptions in order to make sure clients are served. We are often unable to give each client as much time and attention as we would like simply because they outnumber us so much.
