Laboratory Manager Reviews
What is it like working as a Laboratory Manager?
September 2014
Work Flexibility, Family Culture.
Laboratory Manager:
Pros: I am happy with the service we give. The diversity brings interest and inhibits boredom and monotonousness.
Cons: Lack of resources to perform quality jobs, underpaid, minimal perks, no real benefits, nothing solid to hold on to, a feeling of being devalued, restriction to a specific social class with very limited room for improvement, no room for promotion, a boss that changes his word too often, a feeling of frustration and tiredness at the thought of building someone else's dream and not my own.

Project Management On Various Tasks.
Laboratory Manager:
Pros: I like being part or a growing business. Everyday is something new. I am part of many new and exciting projects for this company. I enjoy managing the lab employees who work for me. I work directly with the CEO.
Cons: Being assigned to multiple tasks can spread me too thin: I am unable to give full attention to everything and its taken me away from working more hands on with my employees and ensuring they are properly trained to my/company standards. The CEO has very high expectations and gets involved in so many projects, urging their completion faster that this causes some compromise in the quality of the project.
January 2014
Laboratory Manager:
Pros: I enjoy the variety of work I do, and getting to be a part of every collection that comes through the company.
Cons: The lab covers a lot of odd jobs that can be quite menial such as taking out garbage, replacing light bulbs, disposing of old files.
November 2013
Windowless tedium
Laboratory Manager:
Pros: The work changes over time, so there is always something new to learn, and new students coming to the lab to work with. I also get to conduct my own research, although I'm last in the priority list, so it takes me years to run my research when it should only take a few months.
Cons: I'm currently split between two bosses, so I have to attend two lab meetings, and they seem to forget that I'm splitting my time between them, and my original boss (who's on sabbatical) continues to ask for huge lists of things to be done, even though I only have half the usual time to work on them. So I keep having to explain to her that with priorities as they are, some jobs just have to wait until I can find time (e.g., her lab and personal websites need updating). I also dislike working in a windowless lab all day.
