Get a Foot in the Side Door!
Industrial Designer:
I can be difficult to get experience when no one will give you the chance. Sometimes you have to go through the side door! If you don't get the design job, but want to work for the company, get a job there through another department. Work hard & show them you're a great employee. You may not want that particular job, but you let them know you're committed. Companies love to hire from within for many reasons. They don't have the expense of flying in, boarding, & entertaining an outside applicant. They don't have to mull over personal character & work ethics, because they've already had the chance to know you. They don't have to wait on the catching-up; you already know the company. They also are interested in long-term employment - your desire to reinvest with the company is an advantage. While you're waiting for the chance to get that design job, keep up to date on your skills. Learn new ones. Stay relevant. Now, go do a crappy job well & prove you're the best designer for the job!
