What is it like working as a Graphic Designer?

August 2014
What I do.
Graphic Designer:

Cons: Can't afford to have artist's block.

Great Career With Lots Of Challenges And Creative Outlet.
Graphic Designer:
Pros: I like the fact each day is a new challenge and that I have to constantly learn new things due to the advancement of technology and keep on top of new design trends.
Cons: People who are not design trained expect you to turn over design work quite quickly and when working on your own can be quite stressful to get work done to a high standard but quickly.

Enjoyable work But A Struggle For Big Money.
Graphic Designer:
This is a great career for those who love it. I'm one of those people who can actually say I love my job and I like going into the office. In return, however, there is definitely a pay cap if you work in certain areas. Advertising may pay more, but can be more demanding and less creative depending on your skills. It is possible to make great money, but you have to work hard so don't go into this if its not something you love!

Perks Are Great.
Graphic Designer:
Pros: The perks are great. Nice big office along with a new iMac, scanner, and any other accessories needed. Schedule was flexible while I was in my last semester of college. Insurance is great for employee only, but with children it is very costly. Very relaxing, not stressful at all. Small company so we all feel like family to one another. I get to keep a copy of all publications that I designed. Very casual environment, and very comfortable.
Cons: I feel as if the job title of Graphic Designer is slowly disappearing in society. Everything I learned in school can be learned through tutorials online. Business majors from the same university are learning website design. I feel that now, unlike a few years ago, Graphic Designers must have other backgrounds, such as a minor in Business, Management Information Systems, or something completely opposite from their major. Insurance for one child costs more than my mortgage.

Be creative.
Graphic Designer:
Work Hard and listen to client requirements.
July 2014
Graphic Designer:
Pros: Clients design work and environment are all ideal. The type of work I do is very client based and always celebrates a beautiful occasion. Everyday is something different and the design trends are constantly changing. I appreciate and value that I can use a variety of print and production processes such as hot foil, letter pressing and laser cutting.
Cons: Poor time management within our office environment. Design work is unequally weighted which makes for a stressful environment, No employer/employee heirachy.

You Really, Really, Really Have To Love What You Do.
Graphic Designer:
If you like it, don't be a graphic designer. If you madly be in love with it, be a graphic designer.
