Editor Reviews

What is it like working as an Editor?

September 2016
Freedom with limits.
Editor:
Pros: Editorial freedom, responsibility to make decisions.
Cons: Working partly in an older construct of print.
August 2016
Editor of a Community Newspaper.
Editor:
Pros: I like connecting people with local businesses, organizations, and other people in the community. I like the community paper's notion that it's important to spread Good News as a means to make our neighbors proud of the place where they live, and often, where they grew up. The advertising done is for local businesses, and that's highly tolerable to me, because we should know what the local shops and services are currently offering, and support the economy of the community. I like interviewing people for my "People of the Community" column, and of course, my column about birds.
Cons: Often there's a lot of emailing and sometimes deadlines - especially when they're not met by people you're waiting for - can be stressful.
April 2016
Editing Textbooks.
Editor:
Pros: I love learning everyday for my job. I enjoy working from home. I appreciate additional opportunities provided to me.
Cons: Poor communication, lack of attentiveness and priority to my needs.
February 2016
Ability to grasp and communicate diverse concepts.
Editor:
Pros: Very diverse. Can work on just about anything. Highly creative.
Cons: Lot of work to do. Rarely any personal time.
November 2015
Working as an editor.
Editor:
Pros: The challenge and the intellectual stimulation are major bonuses. No two days are the same. There are also plenty of opportunities to meet unique, interesting and even famous people.
Cons: The hours. Working overtime is the norm and not the exception. There is constant pressure, both from the community and internally. Stress is off the charts. Having to be accessible to everyone, all the time. Having to put out fires, not only in my department, but in others too. Being accountable for everything.
November 2015
Stress Level.
Editor:
Pros: 1. When I do get a good story tip or idea, I feel I'm making a difference in the community and through my writing. 2. I get a chance to cover a variety of things and meet many interesting people, so it's never boring. 3. I can pitch ideas for stories or projects and I frequently do, but unfortunately the suggestions aren't taken unless they fit the company's specific business model.
Cons: 1. The long hours, including nights and weekends. 2. The company's inflexible attitude towards new ideas, particularly ones that look toward the future of journalism. The company cares more about how our newspapers make the towns look good more than real, hardcore journalism. (The best way I can describe it is a PR company posing as a newspaper group.) 3. The low pay, but honestly if I had the creative freedom to do more complex stories, this wouldn't be as bothersome.

Editor:
Pros: The people are great to work with. And the culture is amazing.
Cons: The commute to and from work is way too long.
