Compliance Officers today exist in a world of conflicting regulations, interpretation of rules, rapidly changing rules, risk assessments, audits and examinations. It's like a non-stop ride on a roller coast - exciting, but leaves you breathless and more than a little scared. But if you flourish in an dysfunctional environment, thus is the life for you. Knowledge is only the beginning. You must also develop skills as a politician, and nurse maid, but keep from becoming a compliance bully. The "you will because I told you to" approach is guaranteed to not only make your job as a compliance officer harder, but can also diminish your effectiveness. The best compliance officers are multi-faceted detail oriented politicians. You have to know your stuff and then be able get all levels of management to listen and accept your recommendations. The hardest aspect is to remember that while you can provide, accurate advice, executive management makes the final risk decisions.

Compliance Officer:
As a Compliance Officer you must know regulations; however, application of the regulations defers dependent on the organization. Therefore, one of the strongest skills needed to be an effective Compliance Officer is influential communication. As a Compliance Officer you must be able to influence change, manage difficult situations and promote a culture of compliance or the topic of compliance becomes a dusty manual no one reads and your position is close to irrelevant (until the auditor arrives).
