The important thing is to be able to have the ability to see the bigger picture and a strong Leader. Surrounding yourself with very positive funders that believe in your services .

Communicate, communicate, communicate. Relationships are key to success. Financial: what goes out must come back in.

Make friends with the HR director.

Hire a very good team.

The advice I would give to anyone going into a Not For Profit organisation, in a Senior Mangement role, would be to ask to meet the Governing Board and its members as a collective, and then as individuals. Although the majority of Board Members are volunteers and have the sport at heart, it is the hidden agenda that can bring the business down. A liitle bit of research on each Board Member will certainly pay dividends, as it may help you understand why each person is on the Board. Is it for the sport, them, and or their child. Remove the hidden agendas, and or understand them fully, and you have a chance to succeed.

Working for a charity or community volunteer organisation is about quality of life rather than how much you get paid - although pay is also something that should be provided to reward you for such effort. High praise verbally from the Board of Directors will never be enough. Hang in there! Achieve goals and satisfy yourself knowing that your work is helping the community above all else.
