What is it like working as an Analytical Chemist?

November 2015
Mayne Pharma ACI.
Analytical Chemist:
Pros: Rewarding work and competent coworkers. Ability to be informal with supervisors and coworkers.
Cons: The pay is awful. No overtime pay. Lots of required overtime. Stressful work. Unrealistic standards.
February 2015
Become and engineer or computer programmer.
Analytical Chemist:
For the specialist skill set and knowledge set required for this field we are not compensated for the work. An engineering graduate can look forward to a starting salary of around. £28K -32£ where as a chemistry graduate £16-18£. Without a degree you can still go to ASDA and make the same amount of money. Better become a garbage collector and start at £18K and progress to £40K per annum in less than 10 years.

Verbal promises are no good.
Analytical Chemist:
Work in a place that treats employees well, and also holds you accountable for progress. If you work someplace with a negative atmosphere, get out. It may be tempting to try and change it, but if the managers are negative it will never change. Smaller companies can get stagnant. Shoot for jobs with large companies at the start of your career, they probably will do a better job of training you, and the pay is better. Then, later on in your career you can better deal with, and be of value to, smaller companies that can use your knowledge of solid business practices to experience their own success.
