Varian Medical Systems, Inc. Reviews
What is it like working at Varian Medical Systems, Inc.?
Lack of opportunities.
Field Service Engineer, Medical Equipment in Allentown:
Pros: My colleagues are intelligent and great to work with.
Cons: No growth or learning opportunities. Total lack of mentoring. Lack of diversity.
Helping out others as a design consultant in mfg.
Senior Mechanical Engineer in Danville:
Pros: Freedom to roam and solve issues
Cons: Silos..non collaborative thinking
Decent company, great mission but very low compensation.
Senior Software Engineer in Santa Clara:
Pros: The mission of the company to fight cancer
Cons: Office politics, senior management that does not care about individual contributors - they only care about promoting themselves and making money for themselves in the name of "The Fight against cancer". They are overly concerned with maintaining the "status quo" in the company and change here is slow and almost impossible. Individual contributors are paid extremely low salaries and have unrealistic expectations to meet, despite no monetary recognition or incentive.
Interesting problems to solve, complicated systems.
Senior Mechanical Engineer in Danville:
Pros: My every day work helps thousands of people survive cancer
Cons: Nice people, caring company
Low pay, no drive to improve.
Software Engineer in Santa Clara:
Pros: Mission
Cons: Tech company run by old school manufacturing people who don’t know how to compete in today’s market. Behemoth in its field ready to be toppled over the day a market disruptor rises. You will find the culture here is reactive to market and not proactive. They are the market leader and think just sitting on it is enough to continue to hold their market share. They pay engineering peanuts, management is only concerned about cutting cost even if it comes at the price of talent. Employees are disgruntled and try to work as less as possible to try and make themselves feel better about being underpaid. No motivation for innovation, no drive to make the best use of available and changing technology. If you spend too long here, you will loose market worthy skills and get sucked into this black hole of a career.
Great everything - except compensation.
Software Engineer in Santa Clara:
Pros: Impactful work
Cons: Compensation is very unfair, does not factor in skills in demand and similar compensation for that role in other organizations.
Low pay, old school bureaucratic work culture.
Software Engineer in Santa Clara:
Pros: Great learning, great cause.
Cons: Pay is below average across the board except directors and above. There is visible discrimination even in office equipment based on your position.
