Pros: Wildly broad opportunities to pursue / explore any number of interests, with few limitations. I've helped make slime for our Science on Wheels programs, and I'm currently developing custom solutions for cross-departmental use.
Cons: Any decision that requires more than a single department's input takes absolute ages to be made, and often no decision is actually made until there's a "fire" that can only be put out by finally making said decision. And often, the "fire" has already done a fair bit of damage -- which could have been mitigated or avoided completely.
