Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) Reviews

What is it like working at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL)?

Never a dull moment.
Controls Engineer in Los Alamos:
Pros: I love the opportunity to work on a wide variety of systems. They range from utility systems like steam plants and water treatment to complex R&D systems for nuclear material.
Cons: The bureaucratic efforts required to perform my job as a first line manager are rather unpleasant and tedious at times. I doubt that it is much different from other companies. As an engineer, that is never going to be my favorite part of my job.
Technologist Supervisor supporting research.
Clinical Supervisor in Albuquerque:
Pros: My designs and thinking are appreciated.
Cons: I was paid less than others in my position yet I had to instruct them
Always something new.
Controls Engineer in Los Alamos:
Pros: I like the variety of systems I get to work on. I get opportunities to upgrade and troubleshoot across very different process from utilities, to NASA, to weapons.
Cons: While safety is an established part of our culture and there is an effort to continuously educate the workforce about occurrences, there does not seem to be the same approach to project management. There are no "lessons learned" presentations about project management. They seem to repeat the same mistakes even when warning are provide at the outset of a project.
