YMCA Reviews

What is it like working at YMCA?

Frustrating.
Assistant Director, Child Care in Springfield:
Pros: Love helping families
Cons: Other staff, communication
Program Director, Non-Profit in Duluth:
Pros: Opportunities to create and be creative, flexibility, trust in my work, organization and planning, excellent co-workers, the majority of the members are wonderful people that I truly love interacting with.
Cons: Managing staff. I do enjoy getting to be a leader and train new staff, but it is hard to find qualified staff for the positions open who are dedicated to the job. In the 3 years I've been a manager I could count on one hand the number of times all staff have showed up for their shift without calling in sick or finding a sub, or quitting, ect for a full week. I also feel that while I am spread too thinly and most of us are. When new ideas are created, they are just expected to be added to the already full plates of full time staff and sometimes there is no cross over between the program and the job description. It often just lands on the person who has the least full plate at that time. Sometimes it feels like there is no real vision or direction overall as an organization, but rather just trying to stay afloat with what we have. There is also very little training in how to deal with angry or upset members, it's a skill I've been able to develop over time, but definitely one I got thrown into.
Human Resources (HR) Generalist in Attleboro:

Stressful.
Operations Manager in Auckland:
Pros: Working with young people to achieve their goals and live their best life
Cons: The pressure to meet KPI's and run a smooth operation. Working with people is always challenging and unpredictable.
Great Experience.
Membership Director in Winston-Salem:
Pros: Meeting the needs in the community, insurance, flexibility
Cons: I feel undervalued and I feel like we can't be as effective as we could be because everyone is afraid to say what's really on their minds as if it is a personal attack. You can't get better if you don't address things that are uncomfortable.
Very mixed feelings.
Member Service Representative in Auburn:

Cons: Pay unfair relative to other positions and quantity of work/thought required
Satisfying.
