Support Technician, Information Technology (IT) Reviews
What is it like working as a Support Technician, Information Technology (IT)?
October 2016
Support Technician, Information Technology (IT):
Pros: I get to work with all departments of the company. Many of the departments deal with different technology and software. I get my hands in some other parts of IT that are not necessarily a part of my job role, I.e. System administration and networking.
Cons: I'm on call a lot and only get cellphone compensation with whatever overtime I incur if I get a call. The company expects availability even off work hours despite service level agreements.
I'm not paid close to the median wage for my position and title.
Communication between management and support team is lacking.

Be skeptical but be realistic.
Support Technician, Information Technology (IT):
Yes staff in IT make a lot of money but if you only do tier 1 work you will be paid like it. Make sure to exceed your responsibilities and if you are not rewarded make sure to leave ASAP. Do not work OT as it is better to change jobs for a 5% raise than an annual 1% raise. Good luck!

Dream Job.
Support Technician, Information Technology (IT):
Pros: I can come to work whenever I want as long as I maintain my 40hrs/wk. I respect my boss. I have my own office. I am allowed to work with little to no supervision. It feels very independent and I receive the respect and recognition I deserve.
Cons: I wish it paid better or had more frequent raises.

Pathway to more.
Support Technician, Information Technology (IT):
Pros: IT is a high paced work environment where there is something more to learn - especially within the support role. Support is typically looked at as a entry level position that gives a person stepping stones to begin their career within IT, which I love.
I love that I work with computers all day, and I love that I enable people to use technology.
Cons: The users suck - people are usually grumpy or using technology inefficiently and are set in their ways to change and adapt to growing technology.

Support Technician, Information Technology (IT):
Pros: Assisting people.
Cons: Rude people.
August 2016
Amazing.
Support Technician, Information Technology (IT):
Pros: I get to work with computers and servers and there are no limits to what can be done and you can never know it all hence why you are always learning and always active.
Cons: The fact that I dont only do IT but have to do building and company maintenance and the salary for it all is way underpaid. I am probably the least paid IT person in Africa.

Aim Higher than Tech Support If You Have A Degree.
Support Technician, Information Technology (IT):
Technical support is meant for people who like to perform repetitive tasks all day with few changes in those tasks. Once you obtain a bachelor's degree in anything, technical support becomes extremely limiting; this is both career and compensation wise.
