What is it like working as a Senior Software Engineer?

January 2020
It's a relatively low COL area.
Senior Software Engineer in Indianapolis:
Pros: At a low COL, it's easy to enjoy life on a lower salary. There are a lot of fun activities in Indianapolis.
Cons: Commute is terrible.

Senior Software Engineer in Lehi:
Great freedom to identify problems and solve them. Fun problems at scale. Good benefits; cafeteria, gym, parties, etc. Management has a well deserved reputation for being honest about strengths and weaknesses of the company.

Senior Software Engineer in San Francisco:
Lyft is generally a good company to work at. The branding about being inclusive and caring is followed through on internally, though that's not ot say the company is perfect in those regards. It's just doing better than most others, and open about needing to improve still. Salary and benefits are competitive. The company suffers from the same common challenges of new IPOs or rapid-growth places, with some lack of internal clarity/process around career growth, communications, and prioritization.

Senior Software Engineer in White River Junction:
Pitney Bowes is large and cantankerous, yet trying to pivot and grow. This makes for an interesting combo - they are trying to move rapidly, yet they are stymied at every turn by their own policies and budget limitations making it hard to do so. They also are very protective of software IP and do not like for their engineers to contribute to open source projects. My team was small and isolated so while I wasn't affected too much by corporate, but getting competitive pay is difficult. Salaries in my office are typically 15-30% below market for the area, even for high performers. Benefits are OK. They are stingy with time off, but the retirement match (6%) is pretty good. The people who I get to work with made that worth it. Your mileage may vary.

I actually spend very little time in Waterloo as I work remote 99.9%
Senior Software Engineer in Waterloo:

Cons: That I live in Ottawa

Do your job an you get left alone.
Senior Software Engineer in Warren:

Cons: No raises, no bonuses, no promotions.

Senior Software Engineer in Mauldin:
The rest of the software industry has left Benefitfocus in the dust in terms of compensation. The culture is now very artificial and hollow. They've slowly ripped out anything unique about the company under Ray. Lots of politics and sycophants.
