Supporting Adults Who Have Special Needs.
Residential Support Worker:
Pros: Being a support worker is very rewarding, you are caring for individuals who require extra support to carry out everyday tasks and activities. I enjoy empowering the residents I work closely with and also integrating them into the community. I enjoy building close bonds with adults who are unable to communicate verbally, however you soon realize they have their own unique way to express their feelings and slowly you begin to build a professional relationship.
Cons: Although being a support worker has its moral advantages, I do find that professionals such as ourselves are under appreciated by other professionals and in my opinion by the general public. Due to the increased media reports on criminal and abusive carers, I have noticed a shift in attitude towards staff working in this field. We are constantly scrutinized, being secretly watched in public and spoken to rudely by other professionals. Another disadvantage of working in this field is the pay scale. The amount of work you do daily is not reflected into the salary. Many support workers share the same disappointment and frustration. The hours are long and the work load increases, however the pay remains the same. Also, when working with adults who have complex needs and who have mental health diagnosis, this can also prove stressful. As regardless of the amount of training you receive; if you lack patience and people skills/communication skills. Then this type of work is not for you.
