Marketing Director Reviews

What is it like working as a Marketing Director?

January 2014
Being Creative And Innovative.
Marketing Director:
Pros: A great marketing team. We have established a great culture for our department.
Cons: We are known to be the department that spends money and are not acknowledged for our marketing efforts.

Be Available More Than 40 Hours A Week.
Marketing Director:
Do not let your job take all the place in your life.

Don't Count On The Bonus.
Marketing Director:
It's a great carrot held out by employers to lure top talent at basement pay - look, we're giving you a huge bonus. Payable when the company meets its target. If we meet our target. Man, we set aggressive targets. Anyway, your base pay is almost enough to live on provided you have several credit cards that you don't mind loading up in case you also want to have a life. Find out how often the bonus has been paid in past years and at what rate. Get really clear on how the company is performing this year. Accept the bonus if it is part of the company culture. But make sure the base pay is livable or even a great job at a great company will turn sour.

Make Marketing Efforts Measurable.
Marketing Director:
Make sure you can measure marketing's impact in the organization so that it is easier to defend your budget and resources. When a company is not doing well, the marketing budget is one of the first things to go. But if you can measure it, then you can defend it.

Do Not Lose Sight Of Career Priorities.
Marketing Director:
Make sure you are able to build a team around you (hire a support staff), or keep your expectations manageable. You are now a north american department of one, and as the company grows, more management levels are being added. Your role needs to grow alongside, or you will end up being the sole support for too many people, and becoming the primary executional support, instead of moving forward as a business leader on par with new leaders.
November 2013

Marketing - ups and downs
Marketing Director:
Pros: I enjoy the creativity and flexibility I have within any given day. I enjoy the customer service aspect to the restaurant world. I work for a CEO and company who respects and honours my work on a day to day basis. I love what I do and I'm thankful that I have the opportunity to do it. I enjoy dealing with vendors and the staff that I supervise. Marketing for new geographic and targeting new demographics is enjoyable. I get a thrill out of creating my own work environment.
Cons: Unpaid overtime and workloads during high season. I often miss out on a social aspects of day to day life with my family and friends. I rarely take vacations and often that leads to stress.
