Marketing Communications Manager:
Be reliable ~ show up for work. Be ready to work when you do show up. Learn all you can by listening to others. Be thoughtful before offering your opinion, if you know enough to have one. Don't say things you think are clever and you won't ever have to say, "I'm an idiot. I'm sorry." Do say, Yes, I can stay . . . I can do it . . . I can pitch in, etc. Do the things you're asked to do to the best of your ability whether you agree with them or not. Remember how you feel now as a newbie and help out other newbies as they come along and you move on up. Cheers!

Most of what you learn in school won't be entirely relevant when you get out. This industry changes rapidly and you'll find you'll learn most of your tactical skills online as you troubleshoot through them. Theory is great, but you can't really understand it until you put it into practice. Continuously educate yourself, especially in the digital world. Read the latest tips and tricks for social media, PR, and digital journalism. Additionally, start nurturing side skills that integrate well into your field now. Learn to code or practice building a website on a Squarespace or Wordpress platform. Become really good at using Adobe design programs. Chances are, you'll need to use these programs for your job and you'll be more marketable with some experience in them.
