Biomedical Technician:
If you are promised anything that's not instant, training, promotion, pay raise etc... Get it in writing and verify with HR, also in writing. I have found communication to be one of the most effective tools over the last 20 years of service. Most times when the department directors know what's going on in their respective areas, even if it sometimes takes a while, they know what's going on and are less reactive. Multi-meter, soldering skills, and ability to read schematics are a few of your best friends. If your Job requires travel stay away from alcohol. Don't lose your license and not be able to get to work as we've had multiple candidates apply only to find out they are unable to drive between locations and cannot be issued a company vehicle.

Stay away from UCSF Medical Center.
Biomedical Technician:
The job of a Biomedical Equipment Technician is a very rewarding one. It provides an exposure to a broad spectrum of high tech medical equipment requiring expertise in electronics, computers, applications, medical terminology and customer service. What I wish I knew about the job, especially the position at UCSF Medical Center, is that there is a huge amount of administrative work (the data entry involved in documenting everything you do every day) added to a very dysfunctional working environment. It's not unlike having to fill out this survey. Though I could go on for hours about the environment at UCSF, suffice it to say that the salary is not worth the sacrifices to your personal ethics you would have to make. The main point about becoming a Biomedical Equipment Technician is that it provides a very challenging career path with many rewards. My only suggestion is that you stay far away from UCSF Medical Center if you decide to pursue this career path.

Bio-med In Dialysis.
Biomedical Technician:
Pros: I like that I can set my own hours, the work is ever changing, there is some routine but its all paperwork. The rest is an everchanging environment that makes it interesting to come to work.
Cons: Short notice deadlines, sometimes there is too much change, frustrating.
