Government of Canada Reviews

What is it like working at Government of Canada?

Many positives and some negatives.
Financial Analyst in Lower Sackville:
Pros: I like the benefits, flexibility of hours and salary
Cons: I don’t like the large institutional vibe
A very stressful job reviewing audits and guiding and leading audit team.
Audit Supervisor in Montréal:
Pros: Everyday is something different.
Cons: The pay.
The pay doesnt match the title.
Administrative Officer in Ottawa:
Pros: Benefits
Cons: Family tree hiring
Senior Economist Government of Canada.
Senior Economist in Ottawa:
Pros: It is extremely interesting, never boring. Public policy issues usually center on the same issues, and require resolution from different angles. Big data is making economists work far more empirical and less theory based.
Cons: Under the previous government, they wanted to get rid of all research positions or outsource them to universities. Accountants were to replace economists in their advisory role. All that happened is that most economists retrained (i.e., computer scientists, obtained MBA in finance/accounting) and ended up displacing the accountants in financial decision making. The problem with the public service is that so many people join looking for security. The Government is always transforming itself. Although there is allot of job security, periodically, they will let go a few thousand people at once. It can be a great place or a very unhappy place.
Government and Business - not a Match.
Business Development Consultant in Ottawa:

Cons: The organization is in another age
Good but Slow.
Economist in Ottawa:

Cons: Inefficiencies
