How to be an LGBTQ+ ally at work

Being an ally means actively supporting and standing up for the rights and dignity of the LGBTQ+ community and individuals alike. In celebration of Pride 2024, we asked Payscalers what allyship looks like at work. Here’s what they had to say:

“Work allies play a bigger role than they may realize in helping to make the workplace a safe, comfortable, and secure place for LGBTQ+ employees. By celebrating important personal events such as engagements, marriages, and children and recognizing setbacks and tragedies that impact the LGBTQ+ community, allies help to foster a work environment of inclusion. In addition to an environment of inclusion, LGBTQ+ employees are more willing and able to be their authentic selves, which makes for a better work environment for all.”

“Payscale provides an environment in which being an ally is welcome and celebrated. To me, allyship at work means respecting everyone, providing a safe space as a friend, and encouraging/supporting LGBTQ+ coworkers.”

“Allyship at work means actively supporting and advocating for the rights and inclusion of colleagues and fostering an environment where everyone feels valued and respected. It involves listening, learning, challenging discriminatory behavior, and promoting equitable practices.”

Whether you’re just starting your journey or looking to deepen your commitment, here are five actionable and positive tips to help you become a more effective and compassionate ally.

1. Understand: Take time to research the history of Pride

Understanding the history of Pride is crucial to being an informed ally. Pride isn’t just a celebration; it’s a commemoration of the struggles and victories of the LGBTQ+ community. Take time to research events like the Stonewall Riots, which played a pivotal role in the LGBTQ+ rights movement.

There are many resources available to help you learn more — from books and documentaries to online articles and videos. By educating yourself, you can gain a deeper appreciation of the community’s journey and the significance of Pride.

2. Listen: Seek out LGBTQ+ voices

Listening is a fundamental part of allyship. Read works by LGBTQ+ authors and listen when LGBTQ+ people share their stories — particularly those with intersectional identities. This helps you understand other experiences and perspectives. Approach these conversations with respect, an open mind, and a willingness to learn.

3. Contribute: Donate and shop with purpose

Contributing to LGBTQ+ communities can also mean providing financial support. Consider donating to LGBTQ+ charities to help sustain organizations that provide vital services and advocacy. Similarly, purchasing from queer-owned businesses supports economic empowerment within the community.

4. Implement: Use inclusive language

Inclusive language is a powerful tool for allyship. Make a conscious effort to use inclusive language in your conversations. Pay attention to people’s preferred pronouns and use them correctly. If you accidentally use the wrong pronoun, apologize quickly and move forward using the correct pronoun. Practicing this shows respect and support for everyone’s identity.

5. Participate: Engage in LGBTQ+ events

Show your support by participating in LGBTQ+ events. Attend Pride parades and events celebrating LGBTQ+ identity and history. These events are joyous and affirming spaces, and respectful presence from allies can mean a lot.

You don’t need to identify as LGBTQ+ to celebrate and support LGBTQ+ communities. As allies, our actions, big and small, contribute to a world where everyone is seen, heard, and valued.

In conclusion, being an LGBTQ+ ally isn’t just about words; it’s about consistent action and genuine support. As we continually work towards being a more inclusive workplace, let’s remember that allyship is a journey of learning, empathy, and solidarity. By working together, we can create spaces where everyone feels respected, accepted, and celebrated for who they are. Keep listening, advocating, and standing up for equality, because every voice and every action counts. Together, we can make a meaningful difference!
