What is it like working as a Technical Writer?

December 2014
Technology and Technical Writing.
Technical Writer:
Learn as much as possible about your company's products. Get a detailed understanding about how they work, what value they bring the customer and what the future developments might be. Never stop asking questions and always remember that as a technical writer, it's your responsibility to make technical information easy for customers to understand and appreciate.

Diversify.
Technical Writer:
Learn as much as you can about everything. Different software programs that are used as tools for this type of job, Framemaker, XML, Robohelp, Excel, Microsoft Word, etc...never stop learning. You gotta love researching information and dealing with the subject matter experts. Ask questions, don't assume. Be detail oriented and meticulous. Learn as much about you subject matter as you can on your own. Obviously, if you already have a technical background in your subject matter you're ahead of the game. You have to enjoy writing, editing and taking criticism constructively. At some point you will become burnt out with a subject and may pursue other areas.

Write And Be Creative.
Technical Writer:
Pros: I work at a small software company, which allows me to perform all types of technical writing (from manuals to release notes) as well as other types of informative content creation (video tutorials). My coworkers are amazing, and I feel like I am part of a family.
Cons: The pay is not amazing since I work with a small company.

Exciting And Challenging.
Technical Writer:
Pros: I get to do a bit of everything. Documentation, training, product testing and marketing. I get a lot of responsibility and my co-workers are great.
Cons: Sometimes multiple tasks get handed to me at once with equal priority. This makes it difficult to juggle, when you get the work done though it's often worth the struggle.
