Staff Pharmacist Reviews
What is it like working as a Staff Pharmacist?
December 2018
Staff Pharmacist:
Cons:
1. Non-competitive retail pay for pharmacists. Sam’s Club pays new graduates in my market $50/hour, while other companies in my same market pay new graduates a significant amount more (Walgreens pays new graduates $59/hr, CVS pays new graduates $62/hr)
2. Limited Hours for Staff Pharmacists with little opportunities to “flex up” and pick up additional shifts. If you are not the PIC, your base is only 24 hours a week. So, $50/hr at only 24 hours a week = Base Salary of $62,400. This is almost impossible to live off of if you are still paying back 100k+ in student loan debt.
3. All of your holidays and sick pay are taken out of your PTO allotted hours and you can only roll over 40 hours every year or you just end up losing it.
4. Raises are based on a percentage, so if you start at a low hourly rate of $50/hour, it will take you forever (like a decade) to eventually become competitive with wages of your colleagues at Walgreens or CVS.
PROS:
1. Store hours are nice (9-7 on Weekdays, 9-6 on Sat, Closed Sun, Closed Major Holidays)
2. 30 minute lunch break when only 1 pharmacist is on duty.
3. Customer demographic seems less problematic. In my experience, customers are more pleasant to you and your staff at Sam’s Club than at other retail stores like Wal-Mart, CVS and Walgreens.
4. Usually lower volume stores, but partially due to the limited open hours.
5. As a staff pharmacist at only 24 hours a week, you still get benefits. (100% Match up to 6% of 401k contributions afte
