Staff Engineer Reviews

What is it like working as a Staff Engineer?

October 2014
Qualcomm.
Staff Engineer:
Pros: Awesome tea. Cutting edge work.
Cons: Very high working hours, lot of pressure.
August 2014
If You're A New Graduate, Don't Work Here.
Staff Engineer:
Pros: Great benefits. Good pay. Flexible, relaxed environment with nice people. Flexibility in what you work on.
Cons: Incredibly low raises. Coworkers are only cordially friendly rather than actually friendly because most are over 40, and have families and other responsibilities. There's flexibility in what you work on, but that's a double edged sword, because if you don't like your group, you can be forced to stay in it because you can do some work in another group. Management is only given 5% time (2 hours per week) to manage 9-15 people. In addition, management doesn't really seem to care. There are no 360 reviews, so if management isn't doing well, it doesn't really matter. Pay is not really tied to performance reviews. Everyone treats you like you're senior staff, so if you're new, you're on your own. If you're a physics major, you're just screwed because no one wants someone who is smart, they want someone who can do what they need done. The hallways are incredibly quiet and there's very little socialization.
April 2014
