Special Education Teacher, Secondary School:
Pros: Everyday is a new day. It can be challenging as well as rewarding. A good professional director is definitely a plus and one who will back you up when needed. I like having a supportive supervisor who will listen to me and the challenges I encounter and who will assist me when needed. I like dealing with children from different backgrounds and who have come from dysfunctional families. I enjoy the challenge the students bring on a day to day basis. It helps make the job more interseting. I love children and like to help them figure out what it is that they want from life and how they are going to meet thier goals, short-term as well as long-term. I like having a good repport with the caretakers as it helps me get to know my students better and enables me to help them through tough times at home as well as at school.
Cons: I don't like supervisors who are not supportive and will leave you out to dry. I don't like dealing with rude parents who are in denial and feel that their child is really trying and it's the teacher who is at fault. I try real hard to develop a good rapport with caregivers so I can speak to them on the phone, via e-mail, or meet with them in person about their child's goals, objectives and behaviors. I'm not always respected by the students and feel that they are sometimes unmotivated and need to be more ambitious and respectful of adults in general. Students I have dealt with insome schools that I have worked at are often not serious about how important it is to have an education because they often don't come from educated parents or parents who believe that it is important to have a good education. Most teachers are challenged by the fact that students are often hungry, not interseted in an education and would rather be out on the street selling drugs.
