Communicate Effectively; Stretch Yourself And Grow!
Security Supervisor:
Communicating (writing and speaking) your ideas, concepts and solutions is as important as having those ideas, concepts and solutions in the first place. As an engineer (or other technically-oriented professional), look out for yourself... Don't neglect writing and speaking development. If you don't have to take it in school, do it afterwards (Toast Masters, blogging, etc) After you have learned and are experienced in getting the best out of yourself as a professional, work on developing the skill of getting the best out of others. This is leadership. The shift in emphasis is from things (devices, projects, solutions, etc) to people. You leverage your knowledge, skills and abilities, across many people to yours and your employers benefit. Then teach your folks to do the same. Whenever you have a change to do something different, acquire a new skill or take on a challenging project, consider doing it. Push yourself; that's how we grow.

Strive For Training And Education, Build Your Resume.
Security Supervisor:
There are several organizations out there that support the field of security by offering training programs, memberships, and certifications. Take advantage of those organizations and build your resume. Do not just become what your job is, develop your job into what it can be. Don't just strap on a uniform and supervise your people, become a student of security and learn how to build a program from the ground up - only then can you truly consider yourself to be a professional.

Don't go to work because you have to. Don't like what you are doing, but love what you are doing.
