Safety Officer.
Safety Officer in Cape Town:
Pros: I started in this industry in 2014 as a junior safety officer and was totally unsure about what awaits me. It was an adjustment not having come from a Safety or Nuclear background, but I adjusted and adapted swiftly. I have been a safety officer for Southey Contracting at Koeberg Nuclear Power Station since September 2018. I have since then got Noscar ratings over the past four years with 99% scoring for the Painting maintenance contract. Safety is a constantly evolving discipline which seeks and requires constant and continual improvement, to which I strive for consistently. I am part of a team that uplift the safety culture on site, and I constantly see where I could find areas for improvement. I worked myself up in this industry and being a woman made my challenge a bit more difficult but worth it and much appreciated in the end
Cons: The most challenging for me was being in a position I had no knowledge of. I started at Koeberg Nuclear Power Station as a Safety Marshall / Watcher, with no idea or clue of the construction world, being an administrator was all I knew, so I definitely had my work cut out for me. Being new to the construction industry, made it extremely difficult to be a woman – In an already “male dominated” world, I had to do everything twice harder, twice more diligent in order pave my way into the safety industry. Although management knows and acknowledges that safety plays a huge part of all industries, funds and resources still requires a lot of attention. There needs to be a mindset change where safety is recognised as an essential part of each contract and budgeted for as opposed to an added frustrating expense that has not been sufficiently budgeted for. I am on a site where we have a maintenance contract which includes separate projects on site. As projects and general work contracts evolve, so does the needs and requirements of health and safety, not to mention the extra paperwork
