Quality Commitment from Upper Management & Mentoring.
Quality Manager:
During the interview process, ensure that there is a strong quality commitment form upper management. This should be spelled out with specific past and future actions and detailed policy and material support. Ask to speak with the General Manager, and even the President of the company, and obtain assurances as to specific commitment to quality culture and what support you can expect from them personally. Interview your would be direct supervisor and ensure that they are someone with the qualifications to mentor you in your advancing career, or that you will have access to a competent mentor. Ask to speak with your would be pears one on one and ask them honestly if they are happy at the company, and why or why not.

Quality Manager:
Update your certifications annually. It is much easier to stay current than it is to catch up.

Military Culture, Strong Hierarchy, But Work Flexibility.
Quality Manager:
Pros: I learn a lot about many business: administrative one, and operational one. I meet a lot of people, and I feel I work for the good reason: saving people.
Cons: There is a lot of sexism in this kind of military hierarchy.

Along the way I choose a management and quality path letting the technology slide. If I had it to do over, I'd continue with technology.
