The career ceiling within Civil Engineering isn't as high as I had hoped. Unless you own your own business, you can only ascend so far and earn so much. That said, I take a lot of pride in my profession and am able to have a high level of identity with my work.

Detail your schedule well, know and advise of the risks and cost/schedule impacts as soon as possible to allow for adjustment (where possible). Clear communication is a must, both with your internal and external stakeholders in order to prevent customer disappointment. Engage your stakeholders early and often and keep them accountable.
