Principal Software Engineer Reviews
What is it like working as a Principal Software Engineer?
May 2021
Principal Software Engineer in Raleigh:
Great company overall.
They really care about the employees. Lots of room to grow (personally and professionally). Big enough for great benefits, pay, opportunities. But not so big that it's super bureaucratic or stuffy.
The IBM acquisition hasn't seemed to hurt culture any. If anything, we are influencing IBM much more than they are influencing us.
May 2021
Fast paced and constantly learning.
Principal Software Engineer in Lexington:
Pros: Always something new to learn.
Cons: Aggressive schedule can lead to short term inefficiency.
February 2021
Overworked, Underpaid Overachiever.
Principal Software Engineer in London:
Pros: I love solving problems
Cons: Aside from receiving salary increases on threatening to leave (twice), I have received an unsolicited merit or cost of living raise in a decade.
December 2020
Costly city but lot of oppy.
Principal Software Engineer in London:
Pros: Lot of opportunities and great sights (definitely not during pandemic)
Cons: Commute and cost of living/ costly small houses
July 2020
Safe job with a decent pace, depending on where you land.
Principal Software Engineer in Hopkinton:
Pros: Experiences vary a lot across the organization, depending on where you land.
May 2020
Empowering Sport, through Technology.
Principal Software Engineer in Portland:
Pros: Nike may be the best company in the world right now. From a beautiful Diversity & Inclusion program, to Pay Equality, to Real Maternity/Paternity leave, and countless more services that are provided to employees. To the ability for Engineering to be *so close* to the consumer, and so connected to sport and the Nike brand in our day to day roles - There’s true excitement, every day. #swoosh
Cons: The expected struggles of a company that has had a digital presence for over 20 years. The adoption of Dev/Ops came fast, the perceived attrition to the latest and greatest of Silicon Valley far outpaced the reality of what was built and deployed in production. Alas we’ve since turned that corner, and I’m highly optimistic about Nike’s Technology future.
March 2020
An uphill battle in politics and dying on your sword.
Principal Software Engineer in Santa Monica:
Pros: I am largely autonomous
Cons: Getting anyone to work toward common company goals takes influence and grinding through private meetings despite all of us sharing the same goals. Our technology is severely out-of-date and maintenance will seemingly never end.
