Pros: I am free to work the way I want to 80% of the time. The other 20% of the time, I'm told exactly what needs to be done without context.
Cons: I'm free to work the way I want to 80% of the time. This is disadvantageous for a young engineer who needs systems and detailed direction. The other 20% where I received specific directions can be a nice change of pace.
