Grueling Work, Frantic Pace, Must Keep Track Of Details
Medical Social Worker:
Hospital Social Work seems to pay better than community social work. However, in some hospital institutions Social Workers are more tolerated than welcomed. Furthermore, the rest of the Social Work field may some times look down on Medical Social Workers as the duties in medical are seen as different than mental health or community social work. In medical social work your client contact is short-term, concerned primarily it's about discharge planning. It is a frantic pace and patients must be moved out, so, don't make early evening plans as you might not get there on time. You can't just walk out at 5:00 PM if there are still patients who need to leave. You will likely have to work occasional weekends and/or carry a pager after hours. Social Workers who can do this job can work fast, keep track of details in the midst of constant interruptions, change priorities but still keep track of things and be a good manager of time.
